5 Frequently asked Restoration Questions

The first thing to note is you can most likely buy a fully restored or partially restored car for less than it will cost to restore your car – often substantially less. So why restore? Classic Car and Classic Truck restorations are right for people that have a history with their vehicle. They've owned it for years…we bought it on our first anniversary, it was grandpa's old truck and other sentiments reflecting it's been in the family and it means too much to buy another vehicle.... And it is a great experience for others to build the car they always wanted but could not afford at the time. Sabra and his team encourage you to give your classic car investment project the same consideration you would when purchasing a time share, stocks or other investment. "75% of my clients view their restored project as a member of the family while another 20% restore because they can afford to build something cool and 5% fall in an other category"- Sabra Johnson

Lesson 2 is that Classic and Antique automotive restoration is a time consuming project- our average is 12-24 months.  Then spend time getting educated on the restorative process used by the shops of your choice (Click Here To View Our 7 Steps of Restoration). Most people love and enjoy the restorative experience once they are educated about the process. Our website is designed in such a way that allows the novice and first time restorers the opportunity to become acquainted with restoration by City Classic Cars. "Our in and out speed on partial restorations are 4-6 months while full projects demand 12-18 months of consistent work" - Sabra Johnson

Lesson 3 states most reputable restoration shops with volume projects charge time and materials rather than "bid the job". Time and materials are the only win-win proposition. There are too many unknowns to effectively bid a job. Either the shop will bid too low and lose the motivation to repair the job or bid too how to protect against unforeseen the  that the financial cost becomes too great. Time and Materials is the method employed by Sabra Johnson and his team at City Classic Cars. When seeking an estimate ask for the shop's rate and then request a good faith estimate per your vision for the build.  "The reality is payroll and parts have to be paid every week, so we have to be compensated for time and every week spent on the car... again, there is no "cheap" way to restore a car."- Sabra Johnson

Parts + Time = Final Price. The key is balancing the time and parts equation which you have a right to balance in anyway you desire. Ultimately you decide how you use your time and parts. You and your project are the driving force. We will not work unless authorized and we allow you to decide whether to repair/clean a part or replace parts. It is balancing that equation in light of the condition of the truck and desired end result.

Lesson 4 is that estimates are just that- Estimates! Some people think restorations are likened to taking a new car in for a paint and body quote- restoration is totally different. Although City Classic Cars provides fair estimates from experts that have been doing this for decades, expect to pay more than the estimate. Every bolt, screw and panel on your classic project is disassembled and inspected. Sabra and his team then reconditions or replaces each faulty part as the classic project is reassembled. If the restoration team finds unanticipated areas needing repair, that increases your price. It is not possible to anticipate everything at the initial estimate. Moreover, Fabrication of metal or rust repair can drive up starting estimates by 40% in some extreme cases. FYI- rust repair is the greatest unknown in the classic car market when giving estimates.  Then as all customers do, those small custom request and really cool things can add another 20% to the initial investment. Make sure the spouse, cpa and family are all committed to the project as this can be a costly but joyous experience. "One day the market will adjust the price points to make car restoration more affordable for the middle class family, yet as of today the industry remains heavily supported by the financially affluent"- Sabra Johnson

Lesson 5 Top Restoration shops bill by retainer as the project unfolds. Few shops in the world can afford to cover 100% of the bill of multiple ongoing bills and wait til completion for the client to settle the balance. The best restoration shops like City Classic Cars will give you a restorative agreement (At City Classic Cars it is a Restoration Order) that explains the agreement of all parties in respects to the restoration. City Classic Cars requires a deposit for our work and then invoices each week against your deposits. You'll be asked to add additional funds when needed so we may continue our work until your project is complete. You can inspect our progress at any time and we take digital photos for every stage of your restoration. "City Classic Charges $100 an hour for services. That hourly rate drops to $90 for all full restorative projects"- Sabra Johnson
